  • Understand the question fully: Read the question carefully. Identify the topic and what type of essay it is. Look for keywords like “agree or disagree”, “advantages and disadvantages”, or “causes and solutions”. Underline or highlight important parts.
  • Think of good ideas: Spend a minute or two brainstorming ideas. Don’t worry about grammar yet. Think of real-life examples, current news, or even your own experience. Write down 2–3 strong points you can develop in your essay.
  • Arrange your points logically: Decide which idea will go in each paragraph. Group similar ideas together. Make sure each paragraph will have one main idea with a clear reason or example. Think about the order — what should come first?

A Simple Essay Structure for IELTS Exam

A good IELTS essay has four main parts:

Many people believe that social media has a negative effect on individuals and society. I agree that although there are benefits, the overall impact is harmful. This essay will discuss both sides before reaching a conclusion.

2. Body Paragraphs

Each paragraph should have:

  • A clear topic sentence (the main idea).
  • Explanation and examples.
  • Linking words (Moreover, In addition, However, etc.).

Tip: One paragraph = one main idea. No mixing!

3. Conclusion

  • Summarise your main points.
  • Give your final opinion.
  • No new ideas here, please!

Example:

In conclusion, while social media offers some benefits, the negative effects on mental health and real-world communication are more significant. Governments and individuals must work together to minimise these harms.

How IELTS Examiners Mark Your Essay
